This blog is named in honour of Lucinda Sharpe who contributed such spirited articles to "The Worker". This Newspaper provided a voice for the birth of the Labour Movement (1890 - 1955). "Lucinda" was almost certainly the pseudonym for Annie Lane, wife of William Lane, legendary editor of "The Worker".

As Lucinda, Annie wrote about Australian society in the late 19th century. A journalist herself, she looked at the class struggle; women's miserable pay and working conditions; the need for both men and women to have the right to vote; the importance of family, friendship and fun. I imagine she would have loved to sing and dance!

Like Annie, I live in Queensland. It seems to me that the values she fought for, and which we've adopted as part of our culture, are under threat. So I am taking up Lucinda's voice to express both my fear and my joy in living right now in Australia.
